WAR works toward strong outdoor finish

The Nansemond River High School track and field team recently competed in the Bojangles Classic in South Carolina and is looking forward to progressing.
It was the first outdoor meet of the season, and the team faced some solid competition.
There were a couple of notable performances, with Kori Carter winning the 100-meter hurdles and Lauryn Freeman placing third in that same event. The 4×100 relay team placed second. Team WAR wasn’t exactly planning to dominate but wanted to see where the athletes are in their process of peaking during late May.
“It was a good starting block for us,” Coach Marco McKoy said. “It was the first time some of our seniors got to compete, so it was good for them to go out there and do that.”
Through the first weeks of the outdoor season, McKoy feels like the team has been progressing well. As in years past during the indoor and outdoor seasons, WAR has a plan for how the team will build up until the championship meets. They want to be competing at their best during that time. Lately, the talented senior class has been showing the underclassmen how things are done — something the team deems really important for the future of WAR track and field.
“We know how stellar the seniors are and what they’ve done,” McKoy said. “It’s been great that they’ve been able to show the younger athletes how things are done. It’s their last season, and they want to leave a legacy behind. Most of them are going to run in college, and they’ll be in the same position these younger runners are in now learning from upperclassmen.”
As Nansemond River builds up to the postseason races, the plan is to stay local for now and continue to get better. They are coming off an indoor season in which the team won its fifth straight indoor state title. From there, WAR went on to indoor nationals and brought home a national championship in the 4×200 relay.
Carter, along with the rest of the fellow seniors, have already accomplished a lot in their high school track careers. McKoy is confident they will continue to add to their legacies by the time their senior seasons are over in June.
