Come spell F-U-N with us

If you enjoy spelling, fun games, and supporting teachers and students in Suffolk Public Schools, there is an event coming up that you won’t want to miss.

The Grown-Up Spelling Bee will take place starting at 2 p.m. May 18 at King’s Fork High School, 351 Kings Fork Road. You’ll want to be part of the buzzing good time.

The event is a fun one. You’ll get to see grown adults — many of them teachers and journalists — struggling to spell words that wouldn’t faze most middle-school spelling bee champions. You’ll get to see silly costumes. You’ll get to see the adults using lifelines they purchased to “sting” other teams with a word they can’t spell.

Best of all, you’ll get to see the Suffolk News-Herald team, the Typographical Airers, defend our title, while a whole hive of other teams compete to take the trophy to their office for a year.

The spelling bee is a lot of fun (especially when you’re the winner), but the purpose is to raise money for the Suffolk Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that does a lot of good for teachers and students in Suffolk Public Schools.

The organization’s support includes scholarships to graduating students, instructional grants to help teachers get extra opportunities or resources for their pupils, and helps support the teacher store that allows teachers to visit once a month and pick up supplies for their classrooms and their students.

We think the Suffolk Education Foundation is a great organization, and clearly we love the Grown-Up Spelling Bee. After you attend the Grown-Up Spelling Bee, we think you’ll agree on both counts.

Tickets are $5 a person, with kids 8 and under free. Call 925-6752 for more information.
