Crude oil prices are on the rise, and gas pump prices show no signs of easing up, according to AAA Tidewater Virginia’s press release on Monday.

Gas prices in Virginia have increased by 19 cents in the past month, and the state average for a gallon of unleaded gas was $2.65 on Monday. That’s three cents higher compared to last year, according to the press release.

Areas like Hampton Roads are seeing even higher prices. On Monday, the Hampton Roads average was $2.66, which was six cents more than last week and a sizable 21-cent jump from last month.

“Compared to the beginning of this year, motorists have definitely felt an increasing squeeze on their wallets at the pump,” AAA Tidewater Virginia Georjeane Blumling stated in the press release. “These increases mean Americans are having to work more to afford to fill up their gas tanks.

“AAA found that Americans must work 22 percent longer than at the start of the year to buy one gallon of unleaded gasoline. That’s 7.3 minutes compared to 5.76 minutes in January.”

Gasbuddy.com on Wednesday recorded regular gas prices at Suffolk pumps that ranged from $2.53 to $2.69, which is a substantial increase compared to the $2.43-to-$2.59 range that was recorded on April 16.
