The Suffolk Public Library announced on Tuesday that it’s officially one of 25 libraries nationwide that will receive a 2019 Teen Intern Grant. This grant is from the Young Adult Library Service Association, a division of the American Library Association.

According to the press release, the grant will allow the library to hire teen interns to help with library tasks. Interns will also gain valuable work experience like following a routine schedule, on-the-job problem solving and improving basic math skills, all of which have been identified as workforce gaps in the community.

The internship will be from June through August. The total grant is for $1,000 and will be used to pay the hired teens a stipend, according to the press release.

“This is a great way for teens to learn about a different career as well as gain some workforce knowledge and skills that can be used in their future,” Tiffany Duck, manager of library locations, stated in the press release.

This grant is possible through a generous sponsorship from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which has provided Youth Literacy Grants to schools, public libraries and nonprofit organizations for years, with the goal of providing assistance in implementing and expanding literacy for youth.
