The death of Newsoms woman Cynthia Carver, who went missing from her Everett Street home on Feb. 22, has been declared a homicide by the chief medical examiner for the Tidewater District.

The cause was listed as “multiple sharp force injuries” in the report, which was released Friday. Maj. Gene Drewery, a spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, stated that there are no other updates on the case.

Carver, 34, had been reported missing that day by her mother, Ann, who told sheriff’s deputies that her daughter was supposed to have started a new job that day. After seeing Carver’s vehicle in the driveway, Ann went to the house and found the back door open. She then contacted the authorities.

An initial search by deputies discovered no one inside, but there was evidence of blood and a knife. Search warrants were obtained to thoroughly search the premises.

Members of the Newsoms community, including those of Carver’s church, Mt. Tabor Baptist, assisted in search parties. On March 5, the sheriff’s office and Norfolk Bureau of the FBI stated they believed that Carver had been abducted.

Though no suspect has been named, a potentially involved vehicle — a silver Chrysler, maybe a Chrysler 200 or similar model — has been identified. It was reportedly seen leaving Carver’s home the night of the abduction.

The body of Carver, the mother of two children, was found by an unnamed person in a southern part of Suffolk on March 19. Suffolk Police took the body to the medical examiner’s office in Norfolk, which confirmed the identity the next day.
