Former Nansemond River High School standout Kieton Rivers earned the Sun Belt tournament Most Outstanding Player honors.
The Coastal Carolina University baseball team went on a surprising run in the Sun Belt Conference tournament to take the championship. As the No. 5 seed in the tournament, Coastal Carolina knocked off the No. 4, No. 1, No. 10 and No. 2 ranked teams in the conference on their way to the title.
Rivers put on a classic performance in the title game against Georgia Southern University. Coastal Carolina overcame a 6-0 deficit to win the game. Rivers went 2-5 with two home runs, four RBIs and two runs. That was his second time having two home runs in the last three games. At one point in the game, when CCU was down 7-4, Rivers hit a three-run homer to tie the game up at seven.
During Coastal Carolina’s conference championship run, Rivers finished with 10 hits, four home runs and six total extra bases. He also had 12 RBIs.
Now, Rivers has helped his team earn a bid to the NCAA tournament. He was a part of a national title-winning team in 2016, the last time the program won the title.
At Nansemond River, Rivers was selected All-State as a junior and a senior. He was also an Ironclad Conference Player of the Year as a junior.
