Gas prices have been steadily declining across Virginia, making the state one of the least expensive nationwide at the pumps, AAA Tidewater Virginia announced on Monday.

The average price for a gallon of gas in Virginia was $2.49 on Monday, which was six cents cheaper than last week, 13 cents less than last month and a 21-cent drop compared to last year, according to the Monday press release.

Gas prices have followed a similar trend in Hampton Roads. On Monday, the average price for gas in Hampton Roads was $2.50, which was a six-cent drop compared to last week, a 13-cent decrease from last month and 22 cents cheaper than last year.

According to the press release, nearly every state across the country has a cheaper gas price average compared to a week, a month and a year ago.

The national average on Monday was $2.74, which was seven cents less than last week, a 13-cent drop compared to a month ago and 18 cents cheaper than a year ago.

“Prices are dropping due to cheaper crude oil and at the same time U.S. supply is keeping pace with demand,” Georjeane Blumling, spokeswoman for AAA Tidewater Virginia, stated in the press release. “The continued drop in gas prices may be an indication that pump prices could be even cheaper this summer.”

Gasbuddy.com on Tuesday afternoon recorded regular gas prices at Suffolk pumps that ranged from $2.35 to $2.65, which represents a solid decline compared to the $2.40-to-$2.69 range that was recorded last week on June 4.
