Dorothy M. Benn Armistead

Dorothy M. Benn Armistead transitioned into the waiting and loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 6, 2019. Dorothy was born in Southampton County on Aug. 19, 1920, to her parents, the late Mamie Scott and Mack C. Benn Sr.
She was the second daughter of four and the fourth child of eight born of Mack and Mamie. She was the last of her siblings to pass and has now made that circle complete once again!
Dorothy was a retired teacher of elementary school in the Franklin City and Southampton County public school systems after 35 years of dedicated and faithful service!
Until her health began to fail, she was a faithful and dedicated member of St. Mark Episcopal Church in Suffolk, where she was active in the Episcopal Church Women’s group. She was also a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and a Heritage member of the East Suffolk High School Alumni Association as a proud member of the first graduating class of the school.
Dorothy is survived by two sisters-in-law, one brother-in law, 15 nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and -nephews and numerous great-great-nieces and -nephews, as well as many, many friends and relatives.
Dorothy’s home going service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, at St. James Episcopal Church, 900 Effingham St., Portsmouth. A wake and the AKA services will be held in the chapel of Crocker Funeral Home from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 17. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home Inc.
