Hampton Roads Moving & Storage on Northgate Commerce Parkway has been getting to the “root” of good business this summer.

The business has devoted about one and a half acres of its nearly eight-acre site to growing produce that is shared with organizations such as Healthy Chesapeake. The garden has been growing tomatoes, green peppers, zucchini, squash, sweet potatoes and more.

Founder and co-owner Don Queeney said the company was inspired by another company that did a similar garden. More than 120 pounds of produce has already been donated to the community this year.

Queeney said that he’s looking for additional support for the garden, especially those with more gardening experience. He’s also looking for more community partners to support the garden so that those that need it can still receive healthy, nutritious foods.

Most food banks suffer food donation shortages during the summer, so the perfect answer to this shortfall is to bridge the gap with produce from community gardens. We are pleased to see that some community gardens are coming not from nonprofit organizations but from businesses that are willing to make up the gap.

We think this is a magnificent idea for any business that has some extra land and can muster a team of volunteers. Suffolk is fortunate to have so many businesses that also make good neighbors, and this is an example that neighborliness can come in all forms — including simply using your resources to the advantage of the community.
