The crash started when a 2014 Hyundai Sonata stopped at a green light to allow a Sheriff’s Department vehicle with its emergency lights activated to go through the intersection.

Buttles, behind the Sonata on a 2005 Harley-Davidson, failed to stop and struck the Sonata from behind, ejecting him from the motorcycle, Virginia State Police said.

At the same time, a 2013 Hyundai Elantra behind Buttles was able to stop but was struck in the rear by a 2015 Ford F150. The force of the impact pushed the Elantra forward, pinning Buttles.
