Simon “Sammy” W. Cowan left this earth on Friday, Aug. 30, 2019 to go rest high on a mountain. He was predeceased by his father and mother Simon and Ruby Cowan. Sammy is survived by his wife of 28 years, Cindy; children, Robbie (Renee), Lynn (Buddy) and Carol (Stephanie), four wonderful grandchildren and three precious great grandchildren; his brother-in-law, Bill Smith (Jeannette) and his loving neighbors, the Fly’s and a host of loving friends.
Sammy retired from the Suffolk Fire & Rescue in 2003 with 36 years of service and true dedication to the department. He rose in ranks over the years from Lieutenant, to Captain, to Battalion Chief and then he was appointed as Deputy Chief (car 2) in July 1994. After retirement, Sam went to work for Dodd RV and found another great group of friends who became a part of our family.
A celebration of Sam’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019 at Oakland Christian Church, 5641 Godwin Blvd. with Rev. Mary Ann Biggs officiating, with a reception afterwards.
The family would like to thank Dr. William Jackson, Dr. Eric Freeman and Dr. Max Weder along with his Transplant Team, who were faithful servants during Sam’s illness.
Memorial donations may be made to Oakland Christian Church or St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 213 N. Main St, Suffolk, VA 23434 or to UVA Transplant Center, fourth floor, 1300 Jefferson Park Ave., Charlottesville, VA 22903.
