Expected to be one of the top teams in Hampton Roads this season, the Nansemond River football team put on a show Friday, racing out to a 25-point lead on its way to a 44-12 win over Norview.

In the second half, Norview finally got on the board, but Nansemond River was clearly in command.

“Overall I feel like those guys did an excellent job out there,” coach Justin Conyers said. “I tell the kids we don’t really measure our success by the scoreboard, but we played well out there. There are a couple of things we need to work on that we’ll get fixed.”

X’zavion Evans and Brent Stratton both had strong nights for the Warriors. Evans finished with 164 yards and three touchdowns while Stratton finished with 70 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman quarterback Nolan James finished 5-for-9 for 98 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

“Evans and Stratton are a great one-two punch for us,” Conyers added. “Then when you add in Nolan and how he managed the offense, everything is trending in the right direction.”

Nansemond River will be on a bye week this week and will use the time this week to focus on themselves.

“Our opponent this week is ourselves,” Conyers said. “We played a week early than we normally have in the past so we’ll use this time to regroup and let the kids rest up and then we can start getting ready for Western Branch.”
