New life for Night Out banners

The National Night Out fun and festivities that Suffolk enjoyed on Aug. 6 will be seen in a new project this fall.
The Suffolk Public Works Litter Control Office, in partnership with the Suffolk Art League and Keep Suffolk Beautiful, will work with volunteers to repurpose the dozens of red, white and blue National Night Out banners that were all over the city for this year’s National Night Out.
According to a press release, these banners will be turned into “useful artist’s smocks” and plant pots.
The smocks and plant pots will then be made available to local organizations upon request, while supplies last. The project will also be extended to incorporate future banners after their use for city event publicity, such as Suffolk Parks and Recreation’s T.G.I.F. concert series.
This work recycles items that would otherwise go to the landfill, according to the press release.
“They’re plastic, and as we all know plastic in landfills takes forever to go way,” said Suffolk Art League Executive Director Linda Bunch, “so anytime we can keep plastic out of landfills is a good idea.”
