The Lakeland High School girls’ volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over rival King’s Fork High School Thursday night.

When rivalries square off, it always makes for exciting games. Each team wants to win, and because the schools are cross-town rivals, the bragging rights come into play as well.

Even though these two teams will meet again, Lakeland got the best of the Lady Bulldogs with a 3-0 win. It was a solid effort for the Lady Cavs, who are 1-1 on the season against King’s Fork and Nansemond River High School so far this season.

“The girls went out there and showed everything we had been working on at practice,” Lakeland Coach Monica Bond said. “I’m very proud of them. We had good passes, hits and we had high energy.”

Bond feels like her group has improved each time they have stepped on the court. Players like Myasia Pareno, Jordan Clark, Brooke Howe, Hannah Bass and Madison McGee have been solid contributors this far through this early portion of the season. Going forward, the Lady Cavs believe this win will build confidence for them going forward.

“I felt we played amazing as a team,” Pareno said. “It shows through all of us. We were cohesive, communicated, and played three amazing sets and finished strong.”

Lakeland was able to defend homecourt, and that is important during rivalries. The Lady Cavs sit at 4-1 on the season.

“We want to keep working hard every time we step on the court,” Bond said. “They are learning more about what they need to do on the court instead of me telling them. I think we are headed in the right direction.”
