The Nansemond River High School football team earned a 45-35 win over Deep Creek High School Friday night.
The Warriors finished the regular season 8-2 with the dominating win. Both teams came into the game with only two losses and were jostling for playoff positioning. The Warriors finished the regular season with their best record in the last four seasons.
Nansemond River had a 42-6 lead before pulling some starters, which allowed the Hornets to mount a bit of a comeback. However, the Warriors knew they had control of the game throughout and were able to hold off the Hornets.
“The late push was on me,” Coach Justin Conyers said. “We felt like we took our foot off the gas a little too early. However, we felt like we dominated the game from start to finish.”
X’zavion Evans rushed for 224 yards and added touchdowns on the ground and through the air. He also totaled three two-point conversions for the Warriors. Overall, it was a solid team effort for the Warriors, who feel like they are right where they want to be heading into the playoffs.
“November is our month, so we feel good about how it’s gone so far,” Conyers said. “We feel like when we play our brand of football, no one can stop us.”
With the win, Nansemond River secured the No. 6 seed in the region and will likely be on the road throughout the playoffs.
