The Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel northbound was shut down for several hours Monday evening after a five-vehicle accident resulted in a fatality.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya stated in an email that the crash was reported about 5:24 p.m.

The 5th Division Reconstruction Team was on scene investigating, she added.

The identification of the victim was being withheld pending next of kin.
