The King’s Fork High School boys’ basketball team will host a game Monday night as the No. 2 seed in the Class 4A.

All eyes will be on the Bulldogs boys’ basketball team this postseason, as many regard them as one of the best teams in the state. Their postseason journey will start Monday, when they host the winner of Churchland High School and Heritage High School.

King’s Fork was expected to hold the No. 1 seed in the region, but an upset by Indian River High School in the final game of the regular season dropped them one place. Regardless of the loss, Coach Rick Hite feels this time of the season is what the Bulldogs have been waiting on all season long.

“I felt like we are in the right mindset right now,” Hite said. “We’ve had some good practices, and we feel like we are ready to go. We didn’t get the outcome we wanted in the final game of the season, but we always felt like seeding didn’t matter for us. If we want to show we are the best, we are going to have to play the teams people consider the best. So whether home or away, we are going to play our game and just do what we need to do.”

The Class 4A region boasts multiple teams capable of representing Hampton Roads in the state championship game, which means the Bulldogs will have to be clicking on all cylinders. They have shown themselves able to do that throughout the season, facing some of the area’s best teams. Valuing possessions will be key for the Bulldogs.

“We have to have life, and we have to be in attack mode,” Hite said. “We have a pretty good idea of how teams are going to play us, and we just have to play our game. We have to be engaged.”

The Bulldogs have faced pressure since the preseason with the team’s makeup featuring some of the best players in the state. Because of that, Hite believes the team is internally driven to live up not only to the expectations from outsiders but also to the expectations they have for themselves.

King’s Fork will host the winner of Churchland/Heritage at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
