Snowfall totals Friday morning have varied across the city, with some areas getting just a trace and others, such as the Holland and Whaleyville boroughs, getting several inches.

The snow blanketing the city caused schools and courts to close Friday and delay the opening of city offices.

City officials reported light traffic Friday morning, as primary roads in Suffolk are mostly clear, while secondary roads have some slush and snow on them, but are drivable.

Public Works crews on Wednesday applied 12,600 gallons of brining treatment on the city’s primary roads and a majority of secondary roads, working in 12-hour shifts and putting down more than 650 tons of abrasives overnight.

The forecast from the National Weather Service’s Wakefield office for the city has temperatures reaching about 37 degrees, with the temperature falling to about 20 overnight.

As of 9 a.m., it was 30 degrees at Suffolk Municipal Airport. The city expects that the combination of sun, wind and above-freezing temperatures later in the day will help improve road conditions.

Dominion Power is reporting scattered outages across the city, and just 414 residences are without power across southeastern Virginia as of 9 a.m. Friday.

Though closed Friday, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy theater department’s presentation of Les Miserables will be held Friday evening at the Main Campus. Other rescheduled NSA activities include the following:

Drivers are asked to be cautious on the roads and drive slower, giving a safe distance to vehicles in front of them and avoiding sudden changes in direction. The city asks that drivers stay a safe distance from Public Works vehicles to avoid getting hit with material being spread on the roads.
