Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy baseball season is getting under way, and the Saints are excited to take the field.

The Saints return in the third year of Coach Joey Seal’s tenure. Last season, the Saints went 10-8-1, and they are confident they can improve on that record. The preseason has gone well, with the weather cooperating, allowing the Saints to spend a lot of time outside.

“The weather has been good to us this preseason, which is better than in recent years,” Seal said. “We are excited to get going and seeing what we can accomplish this season.”

The Saints return Iziah Turner, Will Rice and Jack McGhee this season as senior leaders. Talmond Old and Stephen Gottlieb add experience as juniors, as well as Ben Grady being added back into the mix. Jordan Crosland and Jase Howell played well last season and return for the Saints as well.

“We are confident in our senior leadership with those guys,” Seal said. “We have a lot of experience as a group, and we feel like that will be beneficial to us this season.”

The Saints get right to it, with five games and seven days. With this early portion of the season, Seal is looking at how the Saints deal with adversity. They have a tough schedule this year, and he is looking forward to seeing how the Saints respond.

“Adversity is going to be the big thing for us,” Seal said. “We have a young team, so it will be good for those guys to go through that. In practice, we try to incorporate as many difficult situations as we can. We want to be able to win when things don’t go our way.”

NSA will host Atlantic Shores at 4:30 p.m. Monday and then Southampton Academy on the road at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
