The number of COVID-19 cases in Virginia has climbed to 67 with a spike in the number of people tested.

About 1,028 test results had been received as of noon Tuesday, with 67 people testing presumptive positive, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

The Peninsula Health District continues to have the highest number of cases, with 14 — 12 in James City County and one each in York County and Williamsburg.

There are 13 cases in Arlington County, 12 in Fairfax County and five or fewer in Loudoun County, Virginia Beach, Prince William County, Spotsylvania County, Stafford County, Henrico County, Goochland County, Hanover County, Alexandria, Charlottesville, Prince Edward County and Harrisonburg.

There remain only four cases in Virginia Beach, the only place on the Southside where a person has tested positive so far. There are no cases so far in the Western Tidewater Health District, which includes the cities of Suffolk and Franklin, as well as Isle of Wight and Southampton counties.

Drive-through pet pantry

Suffolk Humane Society will have a drive-through pet pantry from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday, this week and next week. Pet owners can get assistance with their needs with this program at the society’s headquarters, 412 Kings Fork Road. Supplies are limited, so it is first-come, first-served. Donations can be left at any time.

Get out and volunteer

The Nansemond River Preservation Alliance has a volunteer opportunity that will allow folks who are not at high risk for having COVID-19 to enjoy the fresh air and help the environment while maintaining “social distancing.”

The NRPA Conservation Demonstration Site at Sleepy Hole Park is in need of maintenance, and work groups will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. March 19 and March 23. Bring a hard rake, hoe and your own drink. Please do not participate if you have respiratory illness symptoms, have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or have underlying health issues.

Special School Board meeting

The School Board will hold its special budget meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday. This meeting will be virtual, with online streaming. The link can be found at tinyurl.com/SPSSpecialMeeting.

Social Security office closed

The Social Security Administration office at 502 Hillpoint Blvd. is closed to the general public until further notice. Phone assistance is available at 1-866-835-7769. Online services are also available at www.socialsecurity.gov.

Belk closed

Belk stores, including the one on North Main Street in Suffolk, will be temporarily closed through March 30. Customers can still shop at Belk.com and on the mobile app.

Water testing temporarily unavailable

The city’s G. Robert House Jr. Water Treatment Facility Laboratory typically provides water testing to citizens who have well systems. However, the laboratory will not be accepting water samples at least through March 30. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization say the novel coronavirus has not been detected in any drinking water supplies, and continued use of tap water is encouraged. The city follows established treatment regulations and processes that prevent waterborne pathogens, such as viruses, from contaminating the water.
