A downtown church will be giving out care packages in its parking lot Sunday in an effort to be a blessing to the community in the midst of a pandemic.

“Our mission as a church in 2020 is to outreach and be Jesus to the community,” stated Pastor Steven L. Brown of Faith Temple Ministries Apostolic. “Sunday’s care package giveaway is another way we show the love of Jesus.”

The packages will include things like nonperishable food, emergency kits, disinfectant supplies and more.

“We wanted to do something, because the stores are getting empty and some people may not be able to get to the store,” said Jeanette Ruffin, church ministry executive administrator. “We wanted to let them know the church is here for the community during the pandemic.”

Ruffin said the bags will be distributed from 9 to 11 a.m. or until they run out in the parking lot, 476 Wellons St. One bag will be given per household.

Ruffin said the church hopes to do this every Sunday until the restrictions are lifted and hopes to get donations in to place in the bags in future weeks.

“Instead of having services, we’re going to do outreach,” Ruffin said. “We’re trying to get donations in so we’ll be able to continue providing for the community during this time.”

Donations of non-perishable food, toiletries and household items will be accepted. People can email jruffin@ftmachurch.com to donate.
