The Western Tidewater Health District has four new cases of COVID-19 from over the weekend and Monday.

Two new cases of COVID-19 are reported in Suffolk, based on Monday morning’s report from the Virginia Department of Health.

Western Tidewater Health District Epidemiologist Amal Patel said the two new Suffolk cases are both women who were most likely exposed due to close contact with other cases. One is in her 40s, and the other in her 70s.

Suffolk’s first case was reported March 19.

The new Isle of Wight case reported over the weekend is a female in her 20s with travel history and close contact exposure, Patel added.

In addition, the first case in Franklin was reported later Monday.

“The patient took all necessary precautions to protect themselves and others once becoming symptomatic,” said Sgt. Scott Halverson, spokesman for both the city of Franklin and its police department. “The Health Department is in the process of conducting a contact investigation and will notify anyone who was in close contact with this individual.”

He added that the agency staff encourages everyone to continue to practice social distancing, good hand-washing practices and to cover your cough.

Virginia surpassed 1,000 total cases of COVID-19 in Monday morning’s report.

The current case total stands at 1,020, which is a 14.6-percent increase from Sunday. A week prior, on March 23, only 254 people in the state had been officially diagnosed.

There have been 136 total hospitalizations and 25 deaths, according to the latest report. A total of 12,038 people have been tested.

Statewide, cases in those over 50 represent about 52 percent of all cases.
