UPDATE: The tornado watch and high wind warning have expired. Conditions remains breezy in Suffolk, but the sun is shining.

Earlier: A tornado watch is in effect for Suffolk and many other Virginia localities until noon.

A tornado watch means conditions may be favorite for tornadoes to develop. If a tornado warning is issued, that means a tornado has been spotted in the sky or indicated on radar.

If a tornado warning is issued for your area, take shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of your home or business.

A wind advisory is also in effect until 5 p.m. Gusty southwest winds are likely behind the storms, with gusts up to 45 miles per hour expected, according to the National Weather Service.

These wind gusts could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down, and scattered power outages may result.

Drivers should use caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle, the National Weather Service states. Secure outdoor objects as soon as possible, if it is safe to do so.
