The Virginia Department of Health has begun releasing more detailed information on COVID-19 cases in Virginia.

There are 229 total cases in the Western Tidewater Health District reported Tuesday, about a 10-percent increase from Monday. That number includes both cases confirmed by a test and “probable” cases — those who were symptomatic with a known exposure.

There are 111 cases in Suffolk, 88 in Isle of Wight County, 18 in Southampton County and 12 in Franklin.

The VDH now also reports the number of people hospitalized in each locality, and the number of deaths in each locality. There are 24 Suffolk patients hospitalized, along with eight in Isle of Wight County and three in Southampton County. There have been two Suffolk deaths, one death in Southampton and one death in Isle of Wight County.

The VDH also now differentiates between confirmed and probable cases. There are a total of 9,630 cases in the state; only 179 of those are probable. There have been 324 deaths, three of which were in probable cases and the rest in those who were confirmed to have the virus.

Statewide, there are 854 patients with confirmed cases who are hospitalized, and 477 people in hospitals with pending tests, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.

About 1,418 people with confirmed COVID-19 have been hospitalized and then discharged.

About 403 people with the virus, or pending tests for it, are in the ICU, and 251 of them are on ventilators. Total ventilators in use at hospitals equal 629, less than a quarter of those on hand.
