A Portsmouth man died in a crash Thursday evening.

Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire & Rescue responded to the single-vehicle accident at the Route 164 off-ramp west at Bridge Road after it was reported at 8:08 p.m., according to a city press release.

The driver was identified as Timothy Fields, 63, of Portsmouth. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Preliminary investigation found the vehicle ran off the roadway, struck a guardrail and rolled over, the press release stated.

The roadway was closed for several hours during the investigation, and traffic was diverted to I-664. The accident remains under investigation.
