As the number of cases of COVID-19 continues downward, Sentara Obici Hospital has been reopened for non-emergency and elective procedures.

Despite the progress, precautions are still being taken at Obici to ensure that when patients come back, there is no exposure to COVID-19. They are calling this campaign, “Safe at Sentara.”

“During this global pandemic, it is more important than ever to resume and maintain care to help treat and prevent chronic or new health issues,” said Dr. Jordan Asher, senior vice president and chief physician executive. “It is also critical for people to pay attention to symptoms of serious health conditions and not forgo or delay care due to fear of contracting COVID-19.”

A previous investment was in place before COVID-19 hit called Cupron. Cupron is copper infused antimicrobial technology that actively kills viruses and bacteria. Contact spreading should be kept to a minimum with the use of EPA-approved cleaning supplies and multi-step cleaning checklists between visits and at the end of the day.

During the clinical trial of Cupron, significant results were shown.

“The hospital has surfaces infused with Cupron as well as the linens in the rooms,” said Dale Gauding, Sentara spokesman. “It is an extra layer of protection that we already had in place that will help stop the spreading of COVID-19 and other viruses.”

Sentara Obici has put in place social distancing measures for its waiting rooms. Chairs have been removed and spaced out to ensure proper distancing. Markings are on the floor to help with distancing as well. Some patients may have to wait in their cars after checking in to reduce the crowd. There will be separate waiting areas and equipment for those suspected to have COVID-19.

“We are caring for all patients in need of any kind of health services, ranging from joint replacements to mammograms, and we are taking extra precautions to provide the quality care they need in the safest manner possible,” said Asher.

Any patient undergoing certain procedures and surgeries will have to take a COVID-19 test and self-quarantine while the results come back.

All professionals, employees, patients and visitors will have their temperature taken when entering the hospital. Masks must be worn at all times and will be available for those who do not have one.

Visitation is available to patients that do not have COVID-19. One visitor is allowed as long as they do not have COVID-19 symptoms. Special cases such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and end-of-life may have two.

“For patients experiencing a medical emergency, including serious injury, severe illness or those who suspect they may be suffering from a heart attack or stroke, we especially advise them to not delay care by contacting their physicians or seeking immediate care,” said Asher.

As research on COVID-19 grows, Sentara will adapt to the new information that comes and apply it accordingly.
