Hattie Smith Stephenson, 84, of Suffolk, transitioned from this life into eternal rest at Sentara Obici Hospital on Thursday, June 18, 2020.

She was born in Seaboard, N.C., to the late Fred Smith and Lillie Moss Hargrove.

She was predeceased in death by her daughter, Dorothy Gatling Johnson, her parents and two sisters, Lillie Jenkins and Salone Ford.

Hattie was employed with Birdsong Peanut Company for many years and retired from Western Tidewater Community Services Board in October 2000.

She is survived by her estranged spouse, Walter Stephenson; three sons, Melvin Stephenson, Suffolk, Milton Stephenson (Gwen), Hillsborough, N.C., and Lorenzo Stephenson (Christy), Auburn, Ga.; and two daughters, Diane Urquhart (Charlie), Suffolk, and Sharon Burgess (William), Chesapeake; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Hattie was a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church. She enjoyed singing in the choir, serving on the Missionary Ministry and assisting in the Culinary Ministry.

A homegoing service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at Metropolitan Baptist Church, Suffolk,. She will be laid to rest in Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home Inc.
