Registration has opened for the 13th annual North Suffolk Rotary Golf Classic on July 9.

The tournament is among the first in-person fundraising events in the area since early March, but North Suffolk Rotary’s last for the year. Rotary donates to many local charities, including Western Tidewater Free Clinic, Coalition Against Poverty in Suffolk, and Nansemond River Preservation Alliance.

“This is the largest fundraiser we have all year,” said Tony Coppa, general manager at Cedar Point Country Club and Rotary member. “All the money raised goes to charities our Rotary supports.”

The day will start with registration and lunch. There will be a four-person scramble and a tournament shotgun start with three flights. There will be awards for first, second and third place in each flight. Mulligans will be available. Dinner and an awards ceremony will follow.

“This fundraiser provides a unique opportunity to play on this private course,” said Tom Powell, a North Suffolk Rotary member. “The course has gone through major renovations this year and is in immaculate shape.”

Registration is $500 for a group of four golfers and $125 for individual golfers. The entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, practice range, golf cart, lunch, dinner, beverages, entry into contests, gifts and prizes.

“The more money we raise is more money we can give to our charities,” said Powell. “If we raise more than we expect, we may be able to give more to our charities or branch out to others.”

During the event, everyone will follow the state guidelines put in place for Phase III. Even though it is too early to see what the next phase will look like, Cedar Point Country Club will follow the regulations as closely as possible.

According to Cedar Point Country Club President Cameron Robinett, the club is following the governor’s protocols for Phase III as closely as it can. Single-rider golf carts will be available for distancing measures. Wipes will be provided on the golf carts to wipe down the carts, flagsticks or any other surface they come in contact with while on the course. The intensity and frequency of cleaning golf carts and dining tables have also increased.

“Our club has a great relationship with the North Suffolk Rotary Club,” said Robinett. “It seems fitting that our first post-shutdown event is with them.”
