A design public hearing for the nearly $8.9 million Bridge Road and Crittenden Road intersection realignment project was rescheduled from June 25 to June 30 due to inclement weather.

The hearing will still take place at Bennett’s Creek Park at 3000 Bennetts Creek Road and will go from 5 to 7 p.m.

The purpose of the design public hearing is to allow city staff to get input on the proposed intersection improvements at Route 17/Bridge Road and Crittenden Road in North Suffolk.

The proposed improvements would realign the current intersection of Crittenden Road at Bridge Road to create a new four-way signalized intersection at Clubhouse Drive. The intersection realignment would also address projected growth in vehicles on Bridge and Crittenden roads. Projected traffic on Bridge Road south of the intersection is projected to be 29,000 vehicles daily in 20 years, versus the 21,000 that it was in 2017.

On Bridge Road north of the intersection, traffic is projected to be 23,000 vehicles in 2040, versus 16,000 per day in 2017.

On Crittenden Road, traffic is projected at 10,000 vehicles per day in 2040 versus the 2,957 per day it was in 2014.

The project will include a free-flow right turn lane from Crittenden Road onto Bridge Road, dual left turn lanes from Bridge Road onto Crittenden Road, and a right turn lane from Bridge Road onto Crittenden Road.

Part of the project also includes installing storm drain facilities, curb and gutter, raised median, street lighting, sidewalks and other related items. The city said the existing Crittenden Road intersection at Bridge Road will be closed.

Of the nearly $8.9 million budgeted for the project, $797,000 will go toward preliminary engineering, just over $2.2 million for right-of-way acquisition — scheduled between this September and June 2025 — and more than $5.8 million for construction, which is set to take place between June 2025 and September 2026.

According to a June 12 letter from project manager Frank Grubbs to the Cedar Point Association, the project should take about a year and a half from start to finish and, with all construction in the right-of-way, would not disturb any of the Cedar Point neighborhood entrance items. Traffic signals will be based on vehicle detection from cameras.

Grubbs said he did not anticipate “extensive impacts” to traffic going in and out on Clubhouse Drive. He said the only work in the roadway, on Bridge Road only, would be removing the existing asphalt and laying down new asphalt, along with installing or modifying pavement markings associated with the new traffic signal.

He said work in the median to improve the intersection “will have a more significant impact on neighborhood traffic, although simple detours around the median break will still result in minimal traffic impacts.”

There are no plans to lengthen turn lanes into Cedar Point, and there are no plans to repave any part of Clubhouse Drive.

The meeting will be in an open forum format without a formal presentation. City staff and design personnel will be available to answer questions related to the project and its design. Residents coming to the design public hearing are asked to maintain social distancing and to wear masks.
