Barbara Marie Thorpe, 79, of Suffolk, went to her heavenly home July 27 at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was born in Kingstree, S.C., and was preceded in death by her parents, Desso Montgomery Sr. and Lizzie Brown Montgomery; her daughter, Barbara Ann Montgomery; her sisters, Bernice M. Geiger and Betty A. Montgomery; and her brother, Desso Montgomery Jr.

She received her academic studies from Nansemond County Schools and had numerous occupations throughout Suffolk, which included Smithfield Packing and National Stream Factory. Barbara was a devoted member of True Gospel Christian Church and loved attending Sunday School until her health began to decline; however, this setback did not stop her from supporting her church.

Those left to cherish her memories: her daughters, Diane M. Smith (Dr. George), Denise Montgomery, Vanessa Peele (Windell), Elanda Rodgers and Carolyn Harris (Randy); her sons, Bernard Thorpe (Marjorie) and Ernest Thorpe Jr. (Kimberly); her sisters, Edna M. Montgomery, Janice M. Jennings (Vernon) and Brenda A. Montgomery; her brother, Thomas L. Montgomery (Rev. Betty); 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
