Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society has decided to cancel and postpone two annual events.

The annual sale held by the society is rescheduled to next spring. Every year, members donate various items and antiques that are stored throughout the year for this sale.

“People have donated plenty for the sale,” said Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society Director Kimberly Blair-Greene. “Due to COVID-19, we have no way to facilitate it.”

The annual sale will now be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 17 at the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society, 137 Bank St.

The annual Touch-a-Truck has been canceled for this October. The event is usually held on the last Saturday on October at the Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum in partnership with the city of Suffolk. This event is the biggest fundraiser the society hosts, as kids have the chance to get up close to different utility trucks. The event is sponsored by 30 to 35 Suffolk organizations each year.

“In years past, we have had over 1,000 people come to Touch-a-Truck,” said Blair-Greene. “With being a high contact event, we had to cancel it this year. It’s a shame because this year it fell on Halloween. We will still have it next year.”

Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that relies on donations to keep going. With COVID-19 canceling fundraisers, the society has been affected by the lack of donations.

“I do want to thank the sponsors who carry us each year,” said Blair-Greene. “We could not do this without them or the people who volunteer their time to make these events happen.”
