A children’s author is making a virtual trip to Suffolk.

In January, the Suffolk Public Library won the nationwide Zoobean’s Annual Winter Reading Challenge to be a top-performing library. The prize is a virtual visit from children’s author Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich to a question-and-answer session. The video will go live at 1 p.m. on Oct. 14 on Suffolk Public Library’s Facebook Page and YouTube Channel.

“Having served as lead for the Winter Reading Challenge, I am ecstatic to host Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich,” says April Watkins, Education and Neighborhood Engagement Senior Librarian. “I truly believe getting to speak with an author is an enriching, once in a lifetime experience for young readers. Our community of readers worked hard, and now they can reap the reward of their efforts.”

The library is asking kids of all ages to submit questions for Rhuday-Perkovich to answer. It can be in the form of a video to play during the live stream or a simple typed question. The library staff will choose five questions for the event, and those selected will take part in a virtual VIP mixer with the author herself on Oct. 7. Another five submitters will be randomly chosen to join the mixer too.

“Right now, offering an author visit-in-person is not ideal, and we are grateful that Olugbemisola is willing to provide an opportunity for students in Suffolk to meet with her in a virtual capacity,” says Watkins. “Kids will engage with a favorite author and ask all of those questions they may have.”

At the Oct. 14 event, Rhuday-Perkovich will read excerpts from one of her books and talk about the experiences that shaped her into the author she is today. The reading’s target age group will be three to five, but any age can enjoy it.
