The Suffolk Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance held its third voter registration drive of the summer and fall on Saturday, just three days before Tuesday’s deadline to register to vote.

They were outside in the rain, and in the end, only one person came out to register. But that one person mattered, and the leaders of SIMA believe their efforts will matter as well.

“We are here to get people to come out and vote,” said the Rev. Henry Diggs, president of SIMA.

The group’s first two voter registration drives this season were at Diamond Grove Baptist Church in Chuckatuck and at Metropolitan Baptist Church on County Street in downtown. Saturday’s event was at Pleasant Union Baptist Church on Webb Street.

The Rev. Dr. Robert Hobbs of Metropolitan Baptist Church was also present at Saturday’s event.

“We just want people to register and vote,” Hobbs said. “If you don’t vote, nothing else you do really counts.”

Diggs said the organization thanked Pleasant Union and its leaders, including the Rev. Dr. V.T. Chambers and the Rev. Dr. Naomi P. Chambers, for the use of the grounds.
