The Suffolk Art League opened its 2020 Annual Juried Exhibition at the Suffolk Art Gallery and announced the winners on Oct. 24.

There were 214 works submitted by 77 artists. The exhibition juror, Chris Gregson, chose 84 artworks for the exhibition. From those 84, 14 received awards.

“All the artists in the exhibit allowed me to experience something new, and I am grateful to each of your personal voices,” said Gregson.

Gregson is an abstract artist who studied at the New York Studio and Forum of Stage Design. His works have been displayed in many corporate collections, prestigious permanent collections, and national and international exhibits.

The exhibition included art in a variety of mediums. Some included oil paint, clay, wood, ink, colored pencil, a mannequin, acrylic paint, collages, stained glass, photography or mixed media.

“We were very pleased with the response of the artists for the exhibition,” said Linda Bunch, Suffolk Art League executive director. “We thank all of the artists who submitted work and hope everyone will come out to see the exhibition.”

This year’s first-place winner was “Sentinel 1” by Heather Nygaard, who by virtue of her win will have an opportunity for a solo exhibit in 2021 at the Suffolk Art Gallery.

“I was immediately engaged by her unique voice as a portrait artist,” said Gregson. “The large-scale oil painting of a young boy’s expressiveness as he looks down at the viewer is painted masterfully using shadow and light. These features all helped me decide it merited first place.”

The second-place winner was Mary Lou Andrews, who had two separate impressive works. Gregson found her watercolor work of “Don’t Worry” with gestural strokes complimentary of her tight watercolor of “The Red Chair.” In third place was “Tico” by Terry Wylie, whom the juror complimented for the seamless blending of materials.

“The rest of the awards went to works by artists who displayed a mastery of their mediums and a vision that made me immerse myself in worlds that only an artist could create,” said Gregson.

Betty Glasscock Memorial Award: Mark Miltz, “Phoenix,” oil

Sharon Picot & Chip Picot Memorial Award: Bob Springfield, “Tennessee Barn Art,” acrylic

Momma Jo & Poppa Jo Memorial Award: Michael Konrad, “How High,” oil

Suffolk News-Herald Award: Jean Peacock, “The Apartment,” collage

Richardson Award: Erlene Hendrix, “Wither Go My Hopes and Dreams,” photographic composite

Embroidery, Etc. Award: Eafrica Johnson, “Reflections” and “Down Grayed,” oil

The 2020 Juried Annual Juried Exhibition will be on display until Dec. 4. The gallery is open on Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. at 118 Bosley Ave.
