UPDATE: The gas line has been secured, and Suffolk Fire & Rescue is in the process of removing its equipment and providing assistance to citizens who may need help returning to their residences.

About 42 residents evacuated from 17 residences, the city said. Residents in eight homes were sheltered in place due to medical needs.

Several affected citizens were provided assistance and shelter on Suffolk Fire & Rescue’s Rehab Bus.

Earlier: Several streets in the Lloyd Place neighborhood are closed due to a ruptured gas line, according to a city press release.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue is currently on the scene of a gas line rupture in the 100 block of North Fourth Street.

Emergency Communications was made aware of the incident at 11:07 a.m., and the first unit arrived on scene at 11:12 a.m. Upon preliminary investigation, it was determined that a contractor working in the area had ruptured a gas service line.  Virginia Natural Gas crews are also on scene.

Occupants in the area have self-evacuated. The Suffolk Fire & Rescue Rehab Bus is also on scene in the event it is needed.

Responding units include Battalion 1, Engines 1, 2, and 3, Ladder 3, Medic 3, Rescue 1, EMS-1, Safety 1, and Rehab 6.

At this time, the following streets in the area are completely closed:  North Fourth Street, North Fifth Street, North Capital Street, and Bank Street Extended. Suffolk Police are also on scene providing traffic control in the area.
