Suffolk’s voting in national races went heavily for Democratic candidates.

With all precincts reporting — but a substantial number of mail-in ballots likely outstanding — Democrat Joseph Biden won Suffolk’s support with about 57.7% over Donald Trump’s 40.5%.

Senate incumbent Mark Warner staved off a challenge by Daniel Gade to win Suffolk’s vote, 59.3% to 40.6%.

For two House of Representatives seats, the trend continued.

Incumbent Democrat Bobby Scott in the 3rd Congressional District won 60.65% of Suffolk’s vote to challenger John W. Collick Jr.’s 39.16%. In the 4th Congressional District, incumbent A. Donald McEachin got by with the narrowest margin of support in Suffolk, winning 51.14% of the vote to Republican challenger Leon Benjamin Sr., with 48.63%.

The general assumption that early votes would trend Democratic certainly played out in Suffolk, as all of the Republican candidates were winning the Suffolk vote until past 11:30 p.m., when the early votes were finally reported.

More than 30,000 Suffolk voters cast their ballots early, either in person or by mail. Some mail ballots have yet to be returned. Voters have until noon Friday for their mail ballot to arrive at the registrar’s office, so long as it was postmarked by Tuesday.
