The Suffolk School Board meeting set for Thursday evening has been changed to a virtual-only meeting “due to a busted pipe and flooding at City Hall,” according to school division spokeswoman Anthonette Ward.

City spokesman Tim Kelley, in a news release, said there are currently plumbing problems at City Hall.

The meeting was scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at City Hall. and go into a closed meeting, to resume at 7 p.m. for the regular meeting. However, instead of having the public to attend in person, people will instead be able to watch a live stream of the meeting on the division’s YouTube channel – @SuffolkSchools.

As a result of the change, the regular meeting will begin at 7 p.m., and it will postpone the closed meeting until the board’s next regularly-scheduled meeting Dec. 10.

Those who had signed up to comment in person at the meeting this evening (Nov. 12) need to email comments to board clerk Tarshia Gardner at tarshiagardner@spsk12.net by 5 p.m. today.

The board is expected to hold another vote this evening on the division’s hybrid plan for returning to school

The city stated in a release that it is aware of roads in the city that have water covering them, as it has received more than five inches of rain as of midday Thursday. There is a flood warning in effect in the city until 6 p.m.

In Isle of Wight County, it postponed its School Board meeting due to the rain and dismissed schools one hour early.
