Like most other things in 2020, Christmas Eve in Southeastern Virginia is shaping up to be more chaotic than most people had probably hoped for.

Some severe weather is anticipated for the area on Thursday, bringing in a cold front that will make Christmas Day even colder than usual.

“We’re anticipating a pretty strong cold front to move through tomorrow afternoon/evening time frame,” said John McGee, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service Wakefield.

The weather service has forecast heavy rain, potential thunderstorms and strong winds for Thursday. McGee said the main impacts in the area will be felt between 4 p.m. and midnight.

The National Weather Service said gusts could be as high as 33 miles per hour in the area, with some areas seeing even higher amounts if they get a stronger thunderstorm.

All of this will usher in a Christmas Day that’s still quite breezy with a high temperature of about 42.
