Fire, police respond to suspected tornado in Holland area

Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire & Rescue have responded to multiple calls related to suspected tornado activity in the Holland area.

The first calls came in about 11:43 p.m. on Christmas Eve, according to a city news release. A home in the 1200 block of Dutch Road sustained damages, as well as several outbuildings in the area.

An adult female suffered minor injuries and received emergency medical assessment, but no transport was needed, the press release stated. Two power poles were also snapped in the area

A home in the 7800 block of Corinth Chapel Road also sustained damages, and several vehicles and trailers were reported overturned.

Emergency workers are continuing to canvass the rural area checking on residents, the news release stated.

About 1,786 Dominion Energy customers in Suffolk were without power about 1 a.m. on Christmas Day, down from about 2,000 earlier in the night. That’s in addition to about 1,882 customers of Community Electric Cooperative, which serves about 3,500 customers in the rural southwest portion of the city, where the suspected tornado hit.
