The Suffolk Humane Society is hosting a pet food giveaway for Suffolk residents who need dog or cat food due to generous donations.

This pet food giveaway will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and Jan. 4 and 5 at the Suffolk Humane Society’s location at 412 Kings Fork Road. To follow social distancing measures, appointments must be made for a 15-minute slot to shop. The appointments will allow for 17 time slots a day.

“It is while supplies last, but there should be plenty,” said Kerri Shallcross, executive director at the Suffolk Humane Society. “Also, if anyone can’t come during those hours, they can always call to see what we have left afterward.”

This pet food giveaway is different from the humane society’s quarterly Pet Pantry. Due to social distancing measures, the humane society is unable to bring out all of their supplies and line them up for people to shop like normal.

“This time, it’s only food,” said Shallcross. “We will have a few blankets and towels available for people to grab if they need them, but for our big pantry giveaway, we hope to have one in the first quarter of next year.”

Due to COVID-19, the Suffolk Humane Society has not held their quarterly Pet Pantry as they have in the past. However, this giveaway was possible due to the generous donations received from residents and businesses in Suffolk. Donors included King’s Fork Farm Condominium Association, Suffolk Animal Hospital and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Animal Lovers Club.

“We want to thank Suffolk businesses and residents for donating and thinking of us,” said Shallcross. “We wish everyone a safe and happy New Year.”
