Hazel Bailey Boykin, 91, of Suffolk, transitioned this life on Jan. 8, 2021. She was the daughter of the late Roy McKinley Bailey and Pattie Taylor Bailey. Hazel graduated from East Suffolk High School in 1947. She retired from Suffolk Public Schools after more than 30 years with the Food Services Department at Forest Glen High School. She loved to cook for her family and was known for her homemade rolls and for catering small events for community groups.

Hazel was a dedicated and lifelong member of Mineral Spring Baptist Church where she served as chairperson for the Sick/Courtesy Committee for more than 30 years. She was also a founder and organizer of the Golden Age Church Beautification Committee. An avid reader and gardener, she was a quiet woman known as a peacemaker who opened her heart and home to community youth along with her own throughout the years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd A. Boykin Sr.; her brother, Clinton Bailey; and her godson, Jerone Scott Sr. She leaves behind one son, Lloyd A. Boykin Jr.; two daughters, Valerie Boykin and Donna Boykin; daughter-in-law, Adalene V Boykin; three grandchildren, Danielle Boykin, Alecia Boykin and Christian Lewis; two god-grandsons David Adams and Christopher Adams; aunts, Glorine Struthers and Florine Parker; two brothers-in-law Dwight Boykin (Harriett) and Harvey Boykin (Joy); and sisters-in-law, Deborah Anderson and Charlotte Boykin along with a host of other relatives and friends.

A small family home-going service will be held  at 1 p.m.  on Saturday, Jan. 16, at Mineral Spring Baptist Church. Viewing will be available at 11 a.m.  at the church. Friends and extended family may participate in the service via a drive-up broadcast service or through zoom. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the church (MSBC) to support her beloved Courtesy Committee. Professional Services have been entrusted to Peebles Funeral Home.
