To celebrate Black History Month, the Suffolk Public Library is hosting virtual events and classes for the whole family.

February is a month to celebrate achievements and excellence in the Black community from past to present. The events will run from Feb. 1 through 28.

“The community can look forward to programming that speaks not only to Black history but also highlights Black history in the making,” said Naomi Hall, marketing and community relations coordinator at Suffolk Public Library. “It will be a celebration of Black joy, expression, achievements, and a timely exploration of the current events that are shaping our world.”

The virtual programs will hold something for the whole family. Children can enjoy a weekly storytime about Black history and programs about Black comic creators and scientists. Teenagers will have the opportunity to learn about activism, Black nerd culture and how to make action figures and comic books. Adults can have the chance to explore Black musicality, hip-hop, African-American genealogy, Black business ownership, current events, and more.

“Participants can also complete a genealogy bingo card for a chance to win a DNA testing kit and also enter to win gift cards from locally owned Black businesses,” said Hall.

Some of the major events include:

• Current Events Round Table for adults at 6 p.m. Feb. 5 over Zoom with Tony Jones, Virginia Organizing and Trevor Lucas from the VAdio Show.
• Black & Super: Let’s Make an Action Figure! for teens at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 8. Reserve a kit and follow along on Facebook or YouTube.
• Black & Super: Real Heroes of Science for kids at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 9. Reserve a kit and follow along on Facebook or YouTube.
• Black & Super: How to Make Comics & History of Black Creators for teens and kids at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 10. Reserve a kit and follow along on Facebook or YouTube.
• Lift Every Voice: Black Musicality for adults at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19, on Zoom. Hear poetic reflections with Nathan Richardson, Sylvia Bond and Kween Yakini.
• Help Me Understand Q&A: The Color of my Skin for adults at 2 p.m. Feb. 20, over Zoom. Learn how to answer kids’ tough questions with an expert.
• Black Business Ownership Q&A for adults at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 26 over Zoom. Join a live discussion with local Black business owners.
