Howard Leon Saunders was born on Feb. 3, 1935, in Nansemond County, to the late Howard and Goldie Saunders. He transitioned on Feb. 1, 2021.
Howard was well known as “Donkey”. He was an entrepreneur in his own way, as he was one of the greatest loggers in Suffolk, Gates County and Sunbury, N.C. Howard was a hard-working and honest man who seemed to love everyone he met. He worked with Perry Lumber Company for many years. As an entrepreneur, he delivered sweet and delicious watermelons in
Virginia Beach, Suffolk and Washington DC.
In Howard’s own words, shortly before he transitioned, “I have lived a long life and I have enjoyed my life”.
Howard truly loved the Lord, always putting God first. His favorite song was “When I’m Gone, Don’t Worry About Me”.
Howard was preceded in death by four brothers, Hanford Sam Saunders, Robert Garland Saunders, James Preston Saunders and John Calvert Saunders.
He is survived by his loving sister, Mrs. Barbara Black (Bobby) of Virginia Beach; special friends, Ray and Zachariah; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to the Autumn Care Nursing Home Staff and Sentara Obici Hospital for their professional services. Thanks to his nephew, Antoine “Dude” Saunders, for his time and patience in bringing Howard his favorite foods.
A graveside memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Feb. 9, at the Cemetery at The Balm Baptist Church, 3731 White Marsh Road.
