Martha Ann Baines Hill, 84, formerly of Sunbury, and for the past several years a resident of Lake Prince Woods in Suffolk, died Monday, March 15, 2021.

Mrs. Hill was born in Nansemond County on Feb. 24, 1937, and was the daughter of the late Shirley McClenney and Thelma Blanchard Baines. A homemaker and farmer’s wife, she was a member of Eureka Baptist Church in Corapeake.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome S. “Shake” Hill.

Surviving are her sister, Geraldine Baines Speight; her brother, Thomas L. Baines; and her nephew, Robert B. “Bennie” Speight (wife, Bonnie), all of Suffolk. Also surviving are two great-nieces and their families, Pamela Merrick (husband, John, and their sons, Robert and Tolson), of Richmond, and Nicole Matzen (husband, Chris, and their daughter, Emma, and son, Corbin), of East Hampton, N.Y.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, and will be conducted by her Lake Prince pastor, the Rev. Gary Newsome. A private burial will follow in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family in the funeral home immediately following the service. Masks and social distancing are encouraged.
