Firefighters extinguish balcony fire

Firefighters extinguished a balcony fire caused by carelessly discarded smoking materials at an apartment building on Sunday evening.

The fire in the 1400 block of Bridgeport Way at 3800 Acqua Apartments was reported at 7:44 p.m., according to a city press release. The first units arrived at 7:49.

Firefighters units found smoking embers on the outside balcony of a fourth floor corner apartment and were able to quickly knock down the fire. There were no evacuations and no injuries. The fire was called under control at 8:02 p.m.

Responding units included Battalions 2 and 3; Engines 5, 9, 10, and 25; Ladders 5 and 6; EMS-1; Medic 5; Safety 1; and Rescue 1. The Chesapeake Fire Department provided mutual aid and their Ladder 10 and Engine 12 responded.
