The Suffolk Public Library is preparing for expanded services and summer fun.

Even though COVID-19 is still very present, the Suffolk Public Library is able to safely expand some of its services as vaccines are going out and the numbers are on a downward trend. The library will increase its services starting April 5.

The most significant change will be the availability of going inside the library to browse and choose books in person. Services such as self-service technology, curbside pick up and other virtual options will still be available like before.

The hours are now 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at the Morgan Memorial Library and North Suffolk Library. The Chuckatuck Library will continue Curbside2Go only from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays.

“Many have asked, but you do not need a reservation to come in,” said Naomi Hall, marketing and community relations coordinator for Suffolk Public Library. “You can walk in, but if we are at capacity, you just have to wait. We’re just letting in small groups at a time.”

Staff members will be stationed near the door to welcome everyone back and keep track of the number of people in the building.

Also coming down the chute are lockers located outside the libraries. These lockers will allow for more flexibility in requesting and picking up items. There is no set timeline for these lockers quite yet, but the library plans for these lockers to be available in the coming months.

As the library expands its services and hours, it is also preparing for activities this spring and summer. IconiCon will take place April 6-10. Even though the events will still be virtual, folks can come into the library to dress up and see the library staff in their costumes as well.

“Majority of the events will remain virtual, but with the summer, there’s a lot that can be done outside and distanced,” said Hall. “We’re thinking of different ways to get people back while staying safe.”

The library is preparing for its Summer Reading Challenge, Juneteenth and Pride Month celebrations, Camp Monday Funday, Family Fridays at the Park and more as summer quickly approaches.

“We have lots of fun in store,” said Hall.
