An afternoon at the opera is taking the stage once again in Suffolk in a free outdoor performance.

The Virginia Opera is coming to Suffolk at 2 p.m. on April 10 at Suffolk Presbyterian Church, 410 N. Broad St. This is a continuation of the series of outside performances, “Staying Alive: Concert on the Lawn,” that it put on last fall. The opera company came to town last October and held a successful performance.

“We are so grateful they thought of us to host this again,” said Maryanne Persons, an elder at Suffolk Presbyterian Church. “I’m glad we get to provide this opportunity for the community.”

The lineup of songs and singers for these concerts on the lawn varies due to the performers’ availability. These shows give performance opportunities for up-and-coming singers at the opera.

According to Persons, the performers try to read the audience to make sure they sing a variety of songs everyone can enjoy. Those who come can expect to hear a mix of classics, pop songs, Broadway tunes and even some Disney favorites.

“It was very well received last time,” said Persons. “Both kids and adults loved it.”

Just like the previous show last fall, there are two ways to enjoy the live concert. The drive-in option allows guests to sit in the comfort of their car and roll down the windows to hear the music. For the picnic option, guests can bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit in the grass. With the event being around lunchtime, folks can bring a picnic to eat or enjoy a local eatery in the downtown area before the show.

The concert will last between 35 minutes to an hour for a short family-friendly time frame, along with plenty of room outside for kids to roam in their designated areas.

The event is free, with no tickets or pre-registration required. Folks can show up early to get a good spot and enjoy some live music.

“This is not a church event,” said Persons. “It’s a wonderful community space that we are happy to share.”
