Deadline approaches for student scholarships

The Board of Directors of the Suffolk Art League announced that the application deadline is approaching soon for the 2021-2022 Suffolk Art League’s Sharon Picot and Chip Picot Memorial Student Scholarship and the John R. Taylor Jr. Memorial Student Scholarship for Visual Arts.

These student scholarships are available to students entering grades 6 to 12 in the 2021-2022 school year. They are not college scholarships. Students must either live in or attend school in Suffolk, either public, private or home school.

This year, the Picot Student Scholarship is offering up to $4,630 in scholarship funds for students to pursue their interest in the visual, performing or literary arts. They may use their scholarship funding for such things as taking classes or lessons, purchase of materials, instruments or equipment, or attending workshops or conferences.

The Taylor Student Scholarship is offering up to $495 in scholarship fund for student to pursue their interest in the visual arts. They may use their scholarship funding for such things as taking classes or lessons, purchase of materials or equipment.

The deadline to apply for these scholarships is April 22, 2021. Applications must include a completed application form, a brief essay, written by the student, and a recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor or other knowledgeable person. In addition, the Taylor Scholarship requires two images of student artwork, no smaller than 5×7.

Anyone interested in contributing to the Sharon Picot and Chip Picot Memorial Student Scholarship Fund or the John R. Taylor Jr. Memorial Student Scholarship Fund to help continue these scholarships may mail a contribution made payable to the fund to Suffolk Art League, P.O. Box 1086, Suffolk, VA 23439-1086 or come by the office located in the Suffolk Art Gallery, 118 Bosley Ave., Suffolk, VA 23434 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays.

Both the Picot and Taylor Scholarship applications are available from Suffolk school guidance offices and arts teachers (visual, band, chorus, theater). They are also available at www.suffolkartleague.com or by coming to the Suffolk Art League office located in the Suffolk Art Gallery, 118 Bosley Ave., or by calling the Suffolk Art League office at 757-925-0448.
