Officials with the U.S. Postal Service confirmed Wednesday that a couple of mailboxes at the post office on North Main Street were vandalized recently.

The boxes have been taped off to prohibit the deposit of mail for more than a week. U.S. Postal Service corporate communications representative Freda Sauter said the boxes are scheduled to be replaced with newer models, which is expected to occur in the next few days.

M.J. Romano, a postal inspector and team leader with the Fraud and Prohibited Mailings Team, Washington Division, said the incident occurred sometime between the last collection on April 3, about 5 p.m., and early Monday morning.

“The investigation remains active and we are unable to comment further at this time,” Romano stated. “Damage to USPS property as well as theft of U.S. Mail are both federal offenses. Anyone with information regarding this incident should report it to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service by calling 877-876-2455.
