Two Camp Community College students have been named to the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society All-Virginia Academics Team.

Zachary Watson, of Windsor, and Ela Wilson, of Newsoms, were announced as recipients of the honor by Dr. Corey McCray, interim president at Camp, at a virtual awards program on April 21.

The All-Virginia Academic Team is designed to recognize high-achieving college students who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that extends their education beyond the classroom to benefit society. Eighty students were honored from Virginia’s 23 community colleges.

Watson will earn an Associate in General Studies degree this spring and will transfer to Regent University in the fall with hopes of eventually becoming a pastor.

Wilson will earn an Associate in General Studies degree this fall and hopes to transfer to a four-year school to earn a degree in biology.

Virginia Community College System Chancellor Glenn DuBois addressed the student honorees, congratulating them on persevering despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Earning this honor is really a feat, especially this year,” he said. “We need leaders to show us a better way forward. Leaders accept challenges. They adapt and overcome.”

Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year colleges, symbolizing excellence in higher education and a commitment to students. Brenda Bergess is the Phi Theta Kappa advisor for Camp.
